“A good title is like a good story beginning; it should attract the reader’s attention, it should predict content, and it should summarize the chapter in a few words.” The kids in Mrs. Schoff’s ELA class know this well. Students on the Six Osprey team are reading Black Star, Bright Dawn by Scott O'dell. As a project to accompany the book, students are doing the “Gettin’ to the Gist of the Novel” project. Each student has selected a chapter. After the chapter is read, a student creates a title to match the reading. Through this project, sixth graders are also being asked to use some of the skills they have been taught this year: visualizing, summarizing, and explaining. Students put everything together in flip charts like the ones pictured here.
