The newly implemented Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs) Program at MHS is excited to announce our first Maine Career Exploration Badge (MCEB) recipients. Initiated by a grant from the Maine Department of Education, our ELO Program provides students with personalized, relevant learning experiences-often community based-where they can apply classroom learning in a real world environment. The MCEB is an initiative funded by Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) that incentivizes student to explore a potential job/career. Students engage in 40 hours of meaningful work and. complete an online job/career readiness course. The goal is for students to be challenged by specific aspects of their job while learning skills necessary for success in the workforce. Upon completion, students are awarded a $500.00 stipend by JMG. Mike Doherty, business management/retail, and Brayden Allen, elderly care/residential living, successfully completed the MCEB. Congratulation to them!

This morning a group of 7 wonderful seniors with trade and/or engineering career pathways in mind went on a visit to Pratt and Whitney. They were all engaged and asked great questions! Some highlights of the trip: A Marshwood alumni gave us a detailed tour of the most pertinent departments in their over 1 MILLION square foot facility Students got to see from start to finish how jet engine parts transform from basic casing to detailed components that are specific to the needs of the certain commercial or military jet They learned about the Employee Scholar program, where from DAY ONE P&W will pay for their employees' education. Our tour guide has two Associate's degrees, a Bachelor's, and is working on a Master's and did not have to pay a dime thanks to P&W! The counseling department is hoping to organize another tour in the spring!

In Ms. McCann's YCCC English 101 class, students had to prepare an infographic and an "elevator pitch" speech (a tight 1-2 minutes) about a topic of their choice. Topics ranged from mental health, cultural issues, health and nutrition, and outerspace/science. Staff and several classes rotated through the classroom to hear the student's quick speech about their topic. The students did a great job and it was fun to hear all the different topics.

Last Tuesday, Mrs. Lontine took a group of interested students on a field trip to the Shipyard. The students were all engaged, and asked some really great questions while on the trip! The students were able to tour: Shipwrights: (in charge of constructing the wood & scaffolding for when a sub is dry docked. Focus there was on the precision required (sometimes, down to 1/8"!) and that "newer" doesn't always mean "better ". Lifting/Handling: Got to hear from one of the instructional leaders who talked about the value of learning, understanding, and being better... as tiny errors can lead to huge repercussions. Transducers: Observed the GIANT (1 million gallon!) tank being held together with plywood, and sonar technology's impact on the work being done on multiple levels. They also went on a driving tour around the entire base, during which time they engage in some great conversations about discovering your career pathway and understanding "benefits" and their relevance as these students approach adulthood/adult decision making. They also encountered at least 4 different individuals on the tours that identified themselves as Marshwood graduates, which was cool to hear- as they each spoke briefly about the path they took from MHS to PNSY, offering the advice they'd give to their high school selves.
